Huntington Bay, N.Y– October 1,
2009- After attending a training seminar in New Orleans,
Louisiana, Sergeant Emil Guirgis and Officer Jeffrey
Schondebare of the Huntington Bay Police Department
were called into action on a United Airlines flight
to New York.
An announcement was made by a flight attendant who
stated that there was a medical emergency on board
and requested the assistance from any medically qualified
passengers on the flight. Sergeant Guirgis and Officer
Schondebare immediately volunteered to assist a passenger
who appeared to be having a seizure. After the landing,
the Officers continued first aid treatment until Rescue
personnel arrived to transport the victim to a local
hospital.
“The incident on the United Airlines flight
demonstrates how well trained the Huntington Bay Police
Department is and how willing they are to take action
in a serious life threatening incident.”, said
Mayor Herb Morrow.
Both Officers were commended for their actions by
the victim’s family as well as the Captain of
the plane and his crew.
